Empowering our future – Upholding children’s rights in the fight against HIV
As we commemorate Human Rights Day, we are reminded of the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every individual, regardless of age, gender, or circumstance.
Among the rights is the right to Health, a cornerstone of human dignity and well-being. Today we focus on a critical issue that demands our attention and action. The rights of children living with HIV and the urgent need to improve their access to healthcare. The HIV pandemic in South Africa continues to pose significant challenges, particularly for our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
Children infected with HIV face a higher risk of mortality compared to adults, a stark reality that underscores the importance of timely access to Advanced HIV Disease care and treatment. Yes, despite the availability of life-saving interventions, many children are
not receiving the care they need.
One of the primary barriers to accessing healthcare is stigma and discrimination that persist in our communities. Stigma often leads to delayed disclosure, preventing children from receiving medical attention. As a society, we need to confront these prejudices and foster an environment where open dialogue and acceptance replace fear and judgment. With the generous support and funding of UNITAID, Aurum Institute, and PATA, we’re implementing a human-centered impact4HIV project in the North West Districts of Bojanala, Ngaka Modiri Molema, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda. We interface with the following facilities:
• Klerksdorp/ Tshepong hospital complex
• Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital
• Mafikeng Provincial Hospital
• Tlhabane CHC
• Bafokeng CHC
• Boitekong Clinic
• Dinokana CHC
